09.08.10 -VISUALLY IMPAIRED DUO WALK THROUGH FIRE FOR BLIND CHARITY
A brave duo of women with sight loss took on the 'the most daring challenge of their lives,' becoming amongst the first visually impaired people to tackle a fire walk.
Nadine Brodrick and Anita Davies, who are both visually impaired, took part in the Cardiff Bay ‘Hot in the Docks Fire Walk 2010' on July 30th, to raise funds for Cardiff Vales and Valleys, formerly Cardiff institute for the Blind. The charity has been renamed to reflect its expanded role providing services throughout South Wales.
The first fire walk mounted in Cardiff Bay was held outside the Wales Millennium Centre staged by Cardiff-based master firewalker David Briscombe, and saw a 20 feet long walkway of burning wood reaching a temperature of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.
David Briscombe said: “For many people a fire walk is a marathon of the mind, overcoming many of our latent fears. The sense of achievement people feel when completing this challenge is overpowering and gives them immense confidence to take on other challenges in their lives. We look forward to raising lots of money for the great work of CVV.”
Nadine said: "This easily the most daring challenge of my life. We want to show everyone that visually impaired people can take on huge challenges, and we hope others will follow in our footsteps.”
Anita said: "The thought of walking on fire is a massive barrier for visually impaired people because we rely on the different types of surfaces we walk on to help us to get around. This surface will be a completely new experience for me! But I want to show people with sight loss that we can overcome our fears.”
The evening commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the fire by CVV Patron - Ruth Madoc, who kindly took time out of her busy schedule performing Calendar Girls at the WMC. Whilst spectators were entertained, the contestants underwent an hour of mental preparation by David Briscombe before being led out and taking turns to walk the burning walkway.
Richard Evans, Head of Fundraising at CVV said: “To step into the unknown like this will show people what is lid every hour of the day for people with sight loss. We hope they will inspire many sighted people as possible to join them and raise funds helping us to deliver services for people throughout South Wales.”
