27.06.11 -CARDIFF’S BEST ‘GREEN’ TALENT PERFORM AT REALLY RUBBISH RECYCLING ACADEMY
‘Really Rubbish’ Children Collect Awards
Primary school pupils across Cardiff have been commended for their creative talents in bringing the message of reducing, reusing and recycling alive - through song and dance - at the Echo-backed Really Rubbish Campaign Show and Awards Ceremony.
Judged by the ‘Western Mail’s very own Go Green reporter Brendan Hughes, who formed part of a three-judge line-up, ‘The Really Rubbish Campaign – The Musical’ competition saw schools performing to Jack Johnson’s ‘3 R’s Song’ which promotes the virtues of ‘Reducing, Reusing and Recycling’.
‘The Musical’ competition was part of a day-long event in Cardiff City Hall, put on by Cardiff Council’s Really Rubbish Campaign, which celebrated its fifth anniversary last year.
Ysgol Pencae Primary in Llandaff picked up the award in the singing category, and children from Creigiau Primary School were hailed as winners in the dancing category.
The aim of the show is to educate the younger generation on recycling and waste minimisation issues that we face on a daily basis, through a lively, entertaining and fun-packed day.
Cardiff Council’s Education and Enforcement Manager, Lucy Parry said, “It was a fantastic day and brilliant to see so many children enjoying themselves, whilst learning and sharing knowledge about recycling and reducing the amount of waste we produce.
“We have been talking to schools today about the importance of food waste recycling and using kitchen caddies provided by Cardiff Council for any leftover food waste at home.”
Exhibitors on the day included Cardiff-based play resource centre, Re-Create; a Pedal Power Workshop; the Cardiff Devils; Cardiff Catering’s ‘Live ‘n’ Cooking’ demonstration team and street dance performers from the ‘Arts Care Gofal Celf Dance Programme’.
The day ended with an Awards Ceremony, which saw the ceremony’s highest accolade – The Green School of the Year Award – going to two Cardiff Schools, Allensbank Primary and Llysfaen Primary School for their active commitment to recycling in Cardiff.
Deputy Lord Mayor – Councillor Jayne Cowan - who gave a heart-warming speech before the awards ceremony said, “This show demonstrates the huge contribution that schools are making to the wider understanding of the need to recycle and minimise waste for future generations.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of it and would like to congratulate all children who attended the ceremony for their wonderful contributions towards making Cardiff a greener city to live in. My thanks go out to all those who worked so hard at organising such a fantastic event.”
